Biographical/Historical Sketch
James L. Adams earned his BA in mechanical engineering at CalTech in 1955. He studied
art at UCLA them came to Stanford where he earned his master's and doctoral degrees in
1959 and 1961. After a few years at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he joined the
Stanford faculty in the School of Engineering in 1966. His administrative positions
included associate dean for academic affairs; chair of the program in Values,
Technology, Science and Society; director of the design division of Mechanical
Engineering; and chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering
Management.
