Scope and Content Note

This series consists of scrapbooks created by members of the Scott family, commercial news clipping services, and Ms. Dolores Tweedie (1931-1996). Included in these scrapbooks are black and white and color photographs, press clippings, reviews, general articles, and interviews; family scrapbooks include news clippings, family photographs, landscapes, interiors, cards, notes, invitations, and magazine and newspaper clippings.

Arrangement

Contents of sub-series 1 are arranged by the order in which they were created; contents of sub-series 2 are arranged by subject and then chronologically.

Subseries 1. Scrapbooks of Dolores Tweedie 1935 - 1952

Arrangement

Contents are arranged numerically, based on the order in which they were created.

Scope and Content Note

Dolores Tweedie (1931-1996), of East Hartford, Connecticut, began to create scrapbooks of her favorite film star, Randolph Scott, in 1943. The contents of these scrapbooks (numbered 1-5) consist of interviews, press clippings, film stills, autographed photos, announcements, and reviews. Ms. Tweedie developed a friendly relationship with Mr. Scott and his wife Patricia over this time period, and subsequently paid a visit to the Scotts in 1950. An article in Scrapbook #5 In addition, at the end of Scrapbook #5, there is a handwritten dedication from Tweedie turning ownership of the scrapbooks over to the Scotts' son, Christopher.

This sub series consists of scrapbooks created by both members of the Scott family and commercial news clipping services. Press clippings are paired here with family scrapbooks for preservattion reasons; not all scrapbooks can be dismantled at this time. News clipping service scrapbooks are bound and densely mounted. Items include reviews, general articles, and interviews; coverage by countries other than the United States include, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Great Britain. Clippings services include Paramount International Corporation and Allen's Press Clipping Bureau. Family scrapbooks also include news clippings in addition to candid family photographs, formal family photographs, landscapes, interiors, cards, notes, invitations, magazine and newspaper clippings detailing Scott's film career and personal highlights.

Series 4. World War II: Solomon Islands Tour 1943-1944

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of largely black and white photographs of Randolph Scott, Jo De Rita, local villagers, and American soldiers stationed in the Solomon Islands during World War II. Included are scripts for various performances, military travel directives and itinerary, maps, amd lettters of introduction. Randolph Scott and Joe De Rita (who later went on to become a member of the "Three Stooges") were part of the Hollywood Victory Committee, an organization founded in 1941 under the auspices of the Screen Actors Guild. Participants like Scott would entertain soldiers stationed overseas, support bond initiatives, and visit those in hospitals to boost troop morale. Researchers should note that there are additional photographs and documents related to this series located in Series 1.2: Scrapbooks, specifically bound Scrapbook 1942-1949 (oversized, box 9).
