The collection of 52 postcards are views of various square-rigged sailing vessels.
All have the vessel name written in pencil on the back. The lettering is very similar to that of the J. Porter Shaw photograph and postcard collection (P05-001), and may very well be the writing of J. Porter Shaw. A little over half of them are stamped "Sold by Arthur Beale, 194 Shaftesbury Ave., London, W.C.". A few are stamped "Nautical Photo Agency."

The items were donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum by Doc Berenson on September 4, 1961. The materials were accessioned into the National Park Service when the museum was made a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-735) and then were transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park after the establishment of the new park in 1989 (SAFR-1).
