    Abstract: Francis M. Fultz (1857-1948) was a school superintendent before becoming the director of conservation and reforestation in Los Angeles City Schools (1925-1932). He also lectured on subjects ranging from California, Hawaii and Yellowstone to camping, wildflowers and weeds. The collection consists of the manuscripts of 37 books and articles by Fultz, as well as carbons, early drafts, illustrations and research notes, books and periodicals containing articles by Fultz. The collection also contains runs of the Sierra Club bulletin, Trails and other periodicals, pamphlets and bound volumes, and lantern slides.

    Biography

    Francis M. Fultz was born on August 21, 1857 in Wilton Junction, Iowa; Ph.D (1886) and MA (1889), Iowa State University; taught at Burlington (Iowa) High School, 1886-95; superintendent of Burlington Public Schools in Burlington (1899-1909) and Santa Barbara, California (1909-13); moved to Los Angeles in 1913; became director of conservation and reforestation in Los Angeles city schools, 1925-32; was a member of the Sierra Club, and also a lecturer, giving illustrated lectures on subjects ranging from California, Hawaii and Yellowstone to camping, wildflowers and weeds; publications include The Upper Mississippi Region (1908), A Study of the Sierra Nevada (1908), The Fly-Aways and Other Seed Travelers (1909), The Elfin Forest of California (1923), and Lily, Iris and Orchid of Southern California (1928); he died in 1948.

    Scope and Content

    Collection consists of the manuscripts of 37 books and articles by Fultz, as well as carbons, early drafts, illustrations and research notes, books and periodicals containing articles by Fultz, runs of the Sierra Club bulletin, Trails and other periodicals, pamphlets and bound volumes, and glass lantern slides, most of them taken by Fultz and colored by his wife.

    Separated Materials

    3000 cellulose nitrate film negatives, 150 black-and-white prints of plants of southern California and 1 book about California wildflowers were transferred to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County on November 28, 1980.
