Arthur Brown, Jr. and remained close associates and friends until Bourgeois' tragic
death in combat in 1915. Bourgeois had named Arthur Brown, Jr. as the executor of his

Physical Description:
Boxes 11-35; Box 36, folders 1-9; Box 90, folders 1-2; Box 97-98; Oversize
Folders 61-80
Arrangement
Arranged hierarchically. Divided into six subseries: Correspondence (2.1);
Presentations (2.2); Associations and Committees (2.3); Awards (2.4); Reference Files
(2.5); Jurying (2.5); and Faculty Papers (2.7).
Scope and Content Note
This series represents the professional activities of Arthur Brown, Jr. outside the
practice of designing and managing the construction of buildings. Some of the records in
this series could be interpreted as more personal in nature (e.g. those for various
social clubs and French cultural organizations), but as these records document
significant networking activities in Arthur Brown, Jr.'s career, they have been placed
in the Professional Papers series. At the core of this series is a large quantity of
correspondence between Arthur Brown, Jr. and other design professionals, which
documents, to a certain extent, their informal discussions of the major issues in
architectural theory and practice. Many of these same issues are addressed in the
correspondence and meeting minutes of the various professional committees on which Brown
served as well as in the clippings collected by Brown. The images and drawings collected
by Brown reveal in part the visual inspiration for Brown's architectural work. The small
collection of faculty papers in this series reflects Brown's methods for teaching
architectural design.
Subseries 2.1
Correspondence
1900-1957
Physical Description:
Boxes 11-21
Arrangement
Correspondence with key contacts is arranged alphabetically by correspondent; general
correspondence is arranged chronologically.
Scope and Content Note
Brown maintained many lifelong friendships his classmates and colleagues from the
École des Beaux-Arts. Brown was particularly close with fellow American
students William Adams Delano, Edward Bennett, and Robert Fahrquhar, and French
students Jean Paul Alaux, Paul Bigot, Andre Blanchecotte, Georges Gromort, and Gustave
Jaulmes. Other significant correspondents were Arthur Upham Pope, Clarence Zantzinger,
Edward S. Dodge, Howard Greenly, and Harrie T. Lindberg. Although many of Brown's
friends chided him for being a poor correspondent, Brown sustained communication with
many of his associates for over fifty years. Aside from these primary contacts, Brown
corresponded for short periods of time with many prominent figures both inside and
outside the architectural profession, including President Herbert Hoover, for whom
Brown later designed the Hoover Institution Library. This subseries also includes many
letters of reference or introduction written by Brown for other design
professionals.

Brown was an active member of architectural associations such as the American
Institute of Architects and the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects. Brown was also an
active member and sometime president of the San Francisco Art Association, from
which the California School of Fine Arts (later the San Francisco Art Institute) and
the San Francisco Museum of Art (later the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) were
formed. Of particular interest is discussion about who should, and more importantly
who should not, be elected to the elite organizations such as the Academy of Arts
and Letters.

Brown maintained lifelong interest in and connections with France, both personally
and professionally. Of the numerous honors awarded him over his lifetime, he took
the most pride in those from French organizations, particularly the Institut de
France, parent organization of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Brown was
elected Correspondent de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1920 and
Associé Étranger de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1926,
succeeding the chair held by painter John Singer Sargent (only eight chairs were
allowed to be occupied by Americans). Also in 1926, Brown was elected Membre de
l'Institut de France, the highest official honor in intellectual and artistic
circles in France. Brown was also appointed Officier de la Légion d'Honneur
in 1932, and later Membre de l' Académie d'Aix-en-Provence in 1950.

Acting in the interest of the preservation and promotion of French culture, Brown
was heavily involved with and intermittently president of the Comité
France-Amerique of San Francisco. During his association with France-Amerique, Brown
helped to organize several campaigns to send aid to France during World War II in
the form of supplies and food staples. The Browns maintained close connections with
their French comrades during the war, corresponding frequently and sending regular
"care packages" to the Laloux family and those of many of Brown's fellow
École graduates.

When not at work, Brown spent much of his time at various exclusive social clubs,
where he presumably built relationships with wealthy local businessmen to form a
network of future clients and collaborators. Associates at the Bohemian Club, the
Pacific-Union Club, the Olympic Club, the University Club (all in San Francisco),
the Burlingame Country Club, and the Century Club in New York, were often involved
in the commissions Brown received.

Scope and Content Note
Brown collected newspaper and magazine clippings related to a variety of subjects.
Because of the extensive quantity and diversity of clippings, they have been
arranged topically for facilitated access. Clipping subject categories include
Architecture, Politics, Art, France, and Bay Area Development, and give insight into
many of the ideas that shaped and reflected Brown's views on architecture and the
political climate of the time. Many of the clippings have notes written in Jessamine
Brown's hand, presumably to highlight for Arthur Brown some point of interest in the
article. There is also a scrapbook that contains newspaper clippings primarily about
Burnham & Co., Willis Polk, and the rebuilding of San Francisco after the
earthquake in 1906. Brown also retained some documentation of works by his close
associates.

Brown traveled extensively between 1928 and 1933 during his firm's most prolific
period after the dissolution of Bakewell & Brown. During this time, he
maintained regular and extensive correspondence with his assistant, Edith Fremdling,
who kept Brown informed of the detailed daily activities of the office with updates
on activities and progress related to all ongoing projects and office architects.
Similar letters were exchanged with Edward Frick and John Davis Hatch, with more
detail relating to the progress of building projects.

Specifications (4.2); Photographs and clippings (4.3); Drawings (4.4); and Full Scale
Details (4.5).
Scope and Content Note
This series, along with the Major Project series, represents the bulk of the Arthur
Brown, Jr. Papers and includes a large number of sketches and finished drawings for most
of the projects designed by Arthur Brown, Jr. Correspondence files, especially for
smaller residential projects are much less complete, and some projects have only
specifications in addition to drawings. Photographs taken by professional architectural
photographers and clippings about projects are filed with individual projects.

Scope and Content Note
This subseries includes an index, created in the 1940s, of project drawings as they
were filed in tubes and envelopes in the office of Arthur Brown, Jr. &
Associates at 251 Kearny Street, San Francisco, CA. This index exists in both a binder
and card file form. This subseries also contains a group of ledgers in which are
recorded individual sheet listings for each project, which include information such as
sheet titles, drawing completion dates, the name of the draftsperson responsible for
the sheet. This subseries also contains some reference drawings used in research for
large projects and a "Comparison of Towers by Arthur Brown, Jr."

Scope and Content Note
This subseries includes contracts, change orders, specifications, and correspondence
with clients and contractors for some projects. It also includes correspondence and
specifications found rolled with drawings, but now filed with other manuscript
materials. Also includes correspondence and meeting minutes relating to Arthur Brown,
Jr.'s work on the Century of Progress Exposition and the Golden Gate International
Exposition planning committees. This subseries also includes a small amount of
correspondence with clients who were also personal friends of Arthur Brown, Jr.,
namely Mrs. Truxtun (Marie) Beale, William and Agnes Bourne, and Mrs. (Celia) Tobin
Clark; these letters are interfiled with project correspondence. This subseries also
includes correspondence regarding prospective projects (not commissioned) and
competitions not won by Arthur Brown, Jr. This subseries also includes photographs of
finished projects and some construction photographs, in addition to clippings from
newspapers, magazines, and professional journals about these projects. Presumably
because Arthur Brown, Jr. maintained an interest in the buildings he designed long
after he was officially involved in them, clippings dates range from the time of the
commission and construction of a building to many years after its completion.

Physical Description:
Rolls 70a-91c
(RESTRICTED)
Arrangement
Arranged alphabetically.
Scope and Content Note
Detail drawings depict elements of a building, often at a 1-to-1 scale (Full Scale
Detail or FSD), and were used as a guide for the craftspeople producing these
elements. This subseries contains numerous such drawings, ranging in size from
10-inches to 34-feet long, with an average length of 8-feet. They are generally
damaged from original use, unwieldy because of their size, and contain relatively
little information in comparison to the smaller scale drawings in the previous
subseries. Due to their fragile nature, these FSD drawings have been RESTRICTED for
use and require special permission from the Curator.

Saint Mark's Cathedral
1926-1949
Physical Description:
Boxes 62-68, Oversize Folders 502-518; Rolls 58-61, 98d
(RESTRICTED)
Arrangement
Arranged hierarchically. Divided into two subseries: Files and Photographs (6.1); and
Drawings (6.2).
Scope and Content Note
Plans for Saint Mark's Cathedral began in 1922 when the diocese of Olympia hired
Brown's École colleague E. Frere Champney to design a new Gothic-style
cathedral for Seattle. Difficulties between Champney and the cathedral building
committee precipitated the hiring of Arthur Brown, Jr. in 1926 to associate with
Champney on the project. The project was beset with numerous budget difficulties,
exacerbated by the stock market crash in 1929, and thus caused much disagreement between
the architect and the building committee and required many re-designs. This series
documents Brown's involvement with the project from his hiring in 1926 to his final
legal settlement with the diocese in 1949.

reports; and specifications for several different design schemes. It also includes a
collection of hundreds of receipts for blueprints ordered for the job. A unique record
type within the collection, they were preserved as an example of the original scope of
work involved in this complicated and lengthy project. It also contains photographs of
models and a series of construction photographs.

Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains relatively little correspondence given the significance of
this project in the oeuvre of Bakewell & Brown. It includes letters of
congratulation sent to Brown after he received the commission; minimal correspondence
with City representatives; some miscellaneous notes and correspondence; a report
titled "Future Occupancy of City Hall," written in 1953 and presumably given to Brown
given his historical relationship with the building; and numerous newspaper and
magazine clippings reporting on or depicting -- even just as a backdrop -- San
Francisco City Hall. Of particular interest is a card file (Box 95) of research
interviews with future building occupants in 1912. This card file also includes a set
of specifications. This subseries also includes some construction photographs and
photographs taken after the completion of the building. An album of photographs of the
newly completed City Hall taken in 1915 can be found in BANC PIC 1905.12274 - ALB.

Arrangement
Arranged hierarchically. Divided into two subseries: Files and Photographs (8.1) and
Drawings (8.2).
Scope and Content Note
The San Francisco War Memorial project began in 1913 with plans to replace the San
Francisco opera house that had been destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, but the program
expanded to include, in addition to other programmatic elements, a war memorial after
World War I. Brown became officially involved in the project as a part of the War
Memorial Architectural Advisory Committee in 1922, but he may have had informal
involvement in the project before 1922, as Brown was a close associate of Willis Polk,
the well-known San Francisco architect who had been given the original opera house
commission. In 1924, Brown, with Willis Polk and G. Albert Landsburgh, was contracted to
develop plans for the two buildings of the War Memorial: the Opera House and the
Veterans Building. After Willis Polk's death in 1924 and several more years of
fundraising, Brown was asked to take over the entire commission. After several more
years of controversy over the design of the War Memorial, the buildings were completed
in 1932.

Scope and Content Note
In 1938 Arthur Brown, Jr. was hired as the campus's Supervising Architect, overseeing
the architectural and aesthetic direction of the buildings and campus plan at UC
Berkeley. As Supervising Architect, Brown oversaw the design and construction of several
campus buildings, including the Women's Dormitory (1938-1942), later named Stern Hall,
the Forestry Building (1946-1948), later named Mulford Hall, and an unbuilt Little
Theater project (1938-1942). Brown himself also designed several structures for the
Berkeley campus, many during his tenure as Supervising Architect, including the Class of
1910 Bridge (1910); Student Infirmary Building (1930), later Cowell Hospital;
Administration Building (1941), later named Sproul Hall; the Emergency Classroom
Building (1941), later named Minor Hall; the 184" Cyclotron Buildings (1940); and his
final building project, the Doe Library Annex (1946-1949) later home of the Bancroft
Library. Brown was eventually asked to resign as UC Berkeley's Supervising Architect by
the UC Regents in 1948, but not before detailing campus plans that would carry John
Galen Howard's original plan through the subsequent twenty years of expansion. Brown's
suggestions were not carried out and the Regents eliminated the position of Supervising
Architect for the campus.
