Abstract: Jakob Aall Bonnevie Bjerknes (1897-1975) was a professor of meteorology at UCLA (1940-1965). He founded UCLA's Atmospheric
Sciences Department. His research work focused on the importance of atmospheric fronts and initial formulation of polar front
model, and global changes in the atmosphere. The collection consists of material relating to Bjerknes and his meteorologist
father, Vilhelm. There are clippings, printed items, correspondence, photographs and memorabilia, papers by Jakob Bjerknes,
awards, and materials regarding his memorial at UCLA, memorial lecture and fund.

Biography
Jakob Aall Bonnevie Bjerknes was born November 2, 1897; his father, Vilhelm Bjerknes published books on meteorology, including
Dynamic meteorology and hydrography (1910-11); Jakob earned a Ph.D at the University of Oslo (Norway) in 1924; became chief of weather forecasting for western
Norway in Bergen, 1921-31; consultancies in Zurich and London; professor of meteorology, University of Bergen, 1931-40; professor
(1940-65) and professor emeritus, beginning in 1965, UCLA; founded UCLA Atmospheric Sciences Department; research work on
importance of atmospheric fronts and initial formulation of polar front model, and global changes in the atmosphere; publications
include
Life cycle of cyclones and the polar front theory of atmospheric cirulation (1922); member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences; he died in 1975.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of material relating to UCLA meteorologist Jakob Bjerknes and his meteorologist father Vilhelm, including
clippings, printed items, correspondence, photographs and memorabilia. Includes papers by Jakob Bjerknes, awards, and materials
regarding his memorial at UCLA, memorial lecture and fund. Contains material about air-sea interactions from the Jakob Bjerknes
Symposium, February 1988. Some materials are in Norwegian.
