The Boys in the Band - Play and Film. Subseries 2. 1968-1970.

Physical Description: 9 boxes (3.75 linear ft.)

Arrangement

Contents are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Scope and Content Note

This subseries consists of records of the original 1968 stage production and the 1970 motion picture "The Boys in the Band." The stage production was first produced off-Braodway at the Playwright's Unit, Vandam Theatre, New York, where it ran for 1002 performances. The film version, directed by William Friedkin, was released in 1970. Taking place in an apartment in New York's posh Upper East Side, the action concerns nine acquaintances who converge for the birthday of one of their friends. The group includes Michael, a lapsed Roman Catholic alcoholic who is undergoing psychoanalysis; Donald, a conflicted friend who has moved far from the city to spurn the homosexual lifestyle; Harold, who is turning thirty and is morose about losing his youthful looks; Bernard, an African American who still pines for the wealthy white boy of the house where his mother was a maid; Emory, who revels in his homosexuality by acting flamboyant and girlish; and Larry and Hank, a couple that lives together despite the fact that they do not agree on the issue of monogamy. Joining them are a male prostitute who has been hired as a ''present'' for Harold's birthday and Alan, an old college friend of Michael's, who claims to be straight but who becomes a little too emotional when his manhood is threatened and who is strangely reluctant to leave each time he says he is going. The original members of the theatre production returned to their roles for the film version. The stage production has been performed in numerous cities around the world. Materials include scripts, notes, correspondence, books, newspaper clippings, articles and reviews.

People Like Us. Subseries 8. ca. 1990.

Physical Description: 1.0

Scope and Content Note

"People Like Us" was originally written as a novel by the author Dominick Dunne in 1988. It was presented as an NBC television miniseries in 1990, starring Connie Sellecca, Dennis Farina, and Eva Marie Saint. Mart Crowley acted as screenwriter. The story centers around a writer whose daughter has been murdered. Upset that the killer's sentence is all too short, the writer begins following the exploits of a "new money" billionaire, his wife, and an old-money dowager, whose son dies of AIDS and whose daughter marries a womanizing anchorman. The lives of all of these people converge as the writer renews his desire for vengeance against the person responsible for his daughter's death. This series consists of a galley proof used as reference by Crowley to write the screenplay.
