Tramp iron, When eaten by cattle, along with hay, this can cause severe injury, porr production, or even death. A new device built by the University of California agricultural engineers separates the tramp iron from forage as it is harvested. Most fields harbor at least several pieces of dangerous iron; some contain pounds of it. Likely sources are bailing wire, broken machine parts, fence wire, staples, and nails. The handful shown was harvested during a trial run on a Davis campus alfalfa field. undated

Teamwork studies at Davis, Paired off in teams, these students on the Davis campus of the University of California are participating in a test of group characteristics that influence performance in perceptual motor skills. Each of the boys operates a dial that moves a stylus through a maze. It requires the cooperative effort of two boys to move the stylus and their speed and quality of performance is measured by the metering devices shown in the foreground of this picture taken overhead. Team results are then compared. It is but one of a series of unique experiments underway in the physical education laboratory as UCD researchers probe for more accurate information on the psychological and physiological stresses and capabilities involved in physical activity. undated

Anthropology (in Old Sacramento), Instructor Jay Ruby examines a piece of crockery before putting it in a bag for detailed laboratory analysis 1966

Physical Description: 1 print
Box UAP_02230

Anthropology, during 1966, anthropology students at Davis have been probing the remnants of Sacramento's historic waterfront community in a program uniting public service with practical experience. In addition to laboratory instruction during the fall and spring in archaeological methods, a number of UCD students worked last summer (1966) for the State Division of Beaches and Parks, uncovering artifacts and useful data for a museum. History books and these objects will provide the last link with this area once bustling with gold miners and traders during the mid-19th century. Soon the area will be part of a freeway. 1966

Genetics, graduate student Carole Meredith pollinates tiny wild tomatoes from Peru. Hundreds of samples of tomato seeds were harvested there last year by a University expedition searching for new genetic strains to use in improving U.S. tomato varieties. Hoped-for improvements include tomatoes that would have more resistance to disease and insects, as well as increased nutritional qualities, increased solids, and traits that would allow improved mechanical harvesting. This project and other work to enhance the world's food supply will be explained by students and faculty at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences on the Davis campus as part of Picnic Day activities this Saturday (April 19) 1975

Viticulture and Enology, how Thompson Seedless grapes thrive when fed a minute amount of gibberellin is shown in this picture taken at a recent meeting of vineyardists on the Davis campus of the University of California. Robert J. Weaver is showing R.B. Bahme of Berkeley the effect of a medium strength dose of 20 parts gibberellin to a million parts water. The compound may eventually replace girdling as a method of enlarging grape size. Weaver's experiments showed that 50 ppm. of gibberellin produced even larger grapes, while 100 or 1000 ppm. produced long, giant-size grapes 1957 August 28
