Biography
David Kuhner received a BS from Ohio State University, an MEd from the University of
Miami, and an MLS from the University of California at Berkeley. He was serving as
Head of Readers' Services and Reference at the Jackson Library of Business, at
Stanford University, when in 1967 he became Chief Science Librarian at the John
Crear Library, in Chicago. In 1970, he was appointed Assistant Librarian for Science
at Honnold Library, and in 1972 became first Librarian at the Norman F. Sprague
Memorial Library. He retired in 1985.
Kuhner was particularly interested in the history of science. His principal published
work on the subject was a collaboration with Tania Rizzo,

Herbert Clark Hoover Collection of Mining & Metallurgy - Bibliotheca de re
metallica
(Claremont, Calif.: Libraries of the Claremont Colleges,
1980).
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection consists of text, correspondence, and photographs produced and
acquired by David Kuhner, Librarian at Norman F. Sprague Memorial Library, during
the course of his research for an article on a bookplate of cowboy and motion
picture star Tom Mix that appears in a copy of C. Alma Baker, ed.,
94 Gift Battleplanes Which Fought in the Great War, August 4th,
1914 to November 11th, 1918, Presented to His Majesty's Imperial Government
...
(London, 1921). The book, which was inscribed to Major Tom Mix by
the editor, is now in the James Carruthers Memorial Collection of the Institute of
Aviation History, Special Collections Department, Honnold/Mudd Library, Aviation
Folio UG635.G7 B2. The article was published in
The Branding
Iron
(the publication of the Los Angeles Corral of the Westerners), No.
136 (September 1979).
The papers comprise a single series, and are arranged by function, as follows: (1)
printed matter; (2) correspondence; and (3) photographs. The printed matter consists
of four copies of issue 136 of
The Branding Iron, as
well as a typescript of the article and research photocopies, with one exception of
the front matter of Baker's book. The correspondence primarily concerns various
photographs of Tom Mix, only one of which was included in the published article. The
majority of the photographs were obtained from the Circus World Museum, Baraboo,
Wisconsin.
