Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of text, correspondence, and photographs produced and acquired by David Kuhner, Librarian at Norman F. Sprague Memorial Library, during the course of his research for an article on a bookplate of cowboy and motion picture star Tom Mix that appears in a copy of C. Alma Baker, ed., 94 gift battleplanes which fought in the great war, August 4th, 1914 to November 11th, 1918, presented to His Majesty's imperial government… (London, 1921). The book, which was inscribed to Major Tom Mix by the editor, is now in the James Carruthers Memorial Collection of the Institute of Aviation History, Special Collections & Archives, The Claremont Colleges Library, Aviation Folio UG635.G7 B2. The article was published in The Branding Iron (the publication of the Los Angeles Corral of the Westerners), No. 136 (September 1979).

The papers include printed matter, correspondence, and photographs. The printed matter consists of four copies of issue 136 of The Branding Iron, as well as a typescript of the article and research photocopies, with one exception of the front matter of Baker's book. The correspondence primarily concerns various photographs of Tom Mix, only one of which was included in the published article. Most of the photographs were obtained from the Circus World Museum, Baraboo, Wisconsin.
