Opus Numbers ca. 1920-2003

Physical Description: 157 boxes

Scope and Content Note

Heinlein assigned opus numbers to each of his works, regardless of form. The manuscripts are in chronological order and the original opus numbering system has been kept intact.
Not all opus numbered materials are extant. Some opus numbers represent book reviews, speeches, interviews as well as collections or anthologies of previously published materials, e.g. Opus numbers 136, 146, 154, 155, 156, and 166. Others are missing from the collection entirely. Material does not exist for opus numbers 146, 154-156, 166, 168, 170, and 172. Still others, such as Grumbles from the Grave and Requiem, published posthumously, have been assigned [by Virginia?] Opus numbers [191] & [192], respectively and include tributes and essays by Heinlein's peers.

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains support material for the manuscripts. Included are desk notes, research notes, articles, tear sheets, published versions, story fragments, artwork, posters, publisher display pieces, unpublished material written by Heinlein.
Also included are Heinlein's 3x5 card file of subject/idea cards. These include story ideas, phrases, possible topics and word play. Unlike the story notes found filed with the original manuscripts, the subject/idea cards appear to represent a general working collection of material kept by Heinlein for future use.
Notes on handling: Some of the research notes are fragile and written on poor quality paper. Measures have been taken to enclose the materials in protective enclosures and newspaper articles in the same condition were photocopied, however, as with many of the earlier manuscripts, extreme care should be taken while handling this material.

Arrangement

The arrangement for Related Materials is as follows:
  • Subject/idea cards
  • General research notes - not identified by year or story title. Other notes are of a general nature and represent the communication between Robert and Ginny, directions, advice, etc, for processing a story.
  • Story title & year if known
  • Research articles - grouped together by Heinlein
  • Opus number & title
