(1950), MA (1954) and M.Litt (1956), Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge; lecturer, University of Alberta, 1954-55;
assistant professor, University of Iowa, 1955-56; assistant professor (1956), associate professor (1959-63), professor and
chairman of the department of history, UCLA (1965-68); dean of social sciences (1976-77) and dean of the College of Letters
and Sciences (1977-82), UCLA; published works include
