    Administrative Information

    Arrangement

Documents which were copied in the archives by methods other than microfilm are listed in this Calendar. The copies were made mostly from about 1908 through the 1930's. Some were copied by hand, some were typed, and a few were enlarged from microfilm. Some were copied on funds provided by Phoebe Apperson Hearst, the Native Sons of the Golden West Travelling Fellowship Fund, and other endowments. Some were done privately by graduate students and scholars.
The arrangement of sections and legajos follows that of the Archivo General de Indias. The arrangement within the legajo is purely chronological. In many cases both the old signature and the modern legajo equivalent appear as identification; in other cases only one or the other is available at this time.
Each document herein listed has been checked against Chapman's Catalogue of Materials in the Archivo General de Indias, and the Chapman number noted in the description. The Catalogue has been annotated appropriately for record prints and transcripts. No attempt has been made within this Calendar to note where modern microfilm correlates to these copies. The use of the microfilm notebooks and this key together would make such a correlation possible.
Documents copied from the archive may also appear in other transcript collections, catalogued separately. This arrangement was necessary because of the physical nature of the material (bound in volumes, etc.) Cross references to these collections appear in the beginnings of the sections of this Calendar. Other collections which include AGI material are BANC MSS Z-E 3, Z-E 9, Z-E 10, and Z-E 13. A key is available for each.
The arrangement of ramos follows that of the AGI. In addition, within the ramo, documents are identified with legajo number and/or date to provide a citation to the original source.
Documents, unless otherwise marked, are transcripts.
