Series 9. Save Maggie's Farm Committee Files 1975-1976

Physical Description: 29 folders

Scope and Content Note

The Committee, headed by Alan Tobey who was part of the RR/CRRE, worked to prevent the Graduate Theological Union from demolishing the house and surrounding gardens on the lot at 2400 Ridge Road, Berkeley, CA (corner of Scenic and Ridge) to build a GTU Library. The house and lot had originally been owned by the Wilson family, but became known among the GTU students and larger community as Maggie’s Farm. Tobey and the Committee did community organizing to mobilize GTU students and neighbors to their cause which included extensive research on the property and working with the City of Berkeley. They finally brought a lawsuit against the GTU. The Committee was unsuccessful. The Wilson house was demolished and the lot cleared in 1976. The Library was built and opened in 1981.
