Background

Scope and content:

This collection documents the fate of several members of a Dutch Jewish family during the Holocaust and reflects the experiences of many Jews living in Nazi-occupied Holland during World War II. The collection is comprised of photographs of the three siblings, Carla, Wim and Lex Hemelraad; correspondence written during that period by them, including a letter sent from Westerbork by Lex Hemelraad; war-time registration certificates; and post-war death certificates and notices from the Red Cross of the Netherlands.

Biographical / historical:

Willem Alexander Hemelraad (1915-1942), Alexander Leo J. Hemelraad (b.1909-1944), and Caroline Rose Wilhelmina Hemelraad (b. 1909-1943) were the children of Abraham Hemelraad and Juliette Sophie Horn (1882-1943). All perished during the Holocaust; Abraham Hemelraad died before the onset of World War II.

The Hemelraad family were residents of Amsterdam, who fled to Rotterdam during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. They were in hiding before their arrests and deportation to Westerbork concentration camp. From Westerbork they were sent to Auschwitz, where they died in the gas chambers.
