Administrative History

On April 30, 1979, a group of bartenders and bar-associated people met at the Frog Pond Restaurant in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The meeting was called by Michael Varady of the Silver Dollar Saloon and Dale Driscoll to "sensitize bartenders as to what is happening both politically and functionally within and for the gay community [so that those bartenders] could relate to what is happening to their customers." This group was later named the Southern California Gay Bartenders Association (SCGBA). A volunteer social services organization, the SCGBA had monthly meetings at various locations throughout Los Angeles in the years 1979 to 1987. The general membership meetings included group discussion, event planning, community announcements and guest speakers, such as gay and lesbian activists. At SCGBA's most active period, the group raised money for and organized community projects and social events, placed bartenders in jobs, and published a monthly newsletter, The Bar Rag.
