Description
Early executive committee minutes, performance
budgets, programs, flyers, press kits, photographs, correspondence, and
newspaper clippings, including reviews, documenting the activities of the
Celebration Theatre, 1982-2006. The collection consists of materials from the
collections of Jim Kepner, the first Vice Chairman, of Robert Schrock, a former
artistic director, and of the Purple Circuit, an information clearinghouse for
gay and lesbian theater, founded by Bill Kaiser.
Background
Celebration Theatre incorporated in 1982 as a community theater to
celebrate the positive creative and cultural aspects of the gay and lesbian
community of greater Los Angeles. The theater has been in continuous operation
since its first production in Jim Kepner's National Gay Archives located on
North Hudson Street in Hollywood. The theater later rented space in the Scorpio
Theatre on Hoover Street in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles before
moving to a West Hollywood-adjacent location on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los
Angeles.
