Scope and Content of Collection
Sanborn fire insurance maps were originally created as a product to help fire insurance companies assess the potential risks
involved in underwriting policies. The maps show in great detail lots, houses, and businesses, typically including addresses,
building height, building footprints, street names, number of stories per building, building construction materials, building
use, and right of way. They also indicate when new buildings appeared and when modifications were made.
