    Biographical Note

    John Richard Shaffer served as a technical sergeant in the United States Army during World War II on assignment as both a war correspondent and a photographer in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater from 1942 to 1944. Shaffer's career after World War II involved writing on the CBI Theater and contributing to publications such as The Nation, Common Sense, and Social Education. Shaffer, who earned a doctorate degree in education, was a faculty member at the University of Southern Mississippi and State University of New York (SUNY), Cortland.

    Photographs, printed matter, and writings relating to American and Chinese military activities in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. Includes photographs of Chiang Kai-shek and of General Joseph W. Stilwell.
