Hōei 7 (Beans 1710.l*) Nansen Bushū Bankoku Shōka no Zu. "World Map."
Scope and Content Note
Designed by Zuda Rokashi (Priest Hōtan). Published by Nagata Chōbei, Kyōto, Hōei 7. 57 x 45 ½. Chinese text by Zuda Rokashi.
The author has set out to improve on the Chinese sources from which this map derives but Nakamura finds it "nothing but a
mutilated copy of the Map of the Five Indies, made up from a confusion of heterogeneous and anachronistic materials."—Beans
World maps representing Buddhist cosmology—The earliest map of this type is the Nansenbushū Bankoku Shōka no Zu (a world map)
drawn by Hōtan, a Buddhist, which was public in 1710 and became the prototype of Buddhist world maps. The Nan-en-budai Shōkoku
Shura no Zu (a world map), the date of which is still uncertain, and the Sekai Daiso Zu (a work map), En-bu-dai-Zu (a world
map), Tenjuku Yochi Zu(a map of India), a trilogy by Sonto, are drived from Hōtanis vrorld map. The special features of these
maps are the representation of an imaginary India, where Buddha was born, and the illustration of the religious World as expounded
by Buddhists. In the Buddhist world maps or Shumi World, the space for the regions called Nan-en-bu and Nan-en-budai etc-equivalent
to the Continentso of the real Earth is very small. It has been maintained that their artists could not have closed their
eyes, as far as these parts are concerned, to the objective world maps made in Europe. But these maps treat India as the heart
of their World, and consequently we can say that they never recognized the European world maps. In their maps the Buddhists
connected Five Continents with the Spiritual World where the Sprit of human beings must go after death. In these maps we find
confusion of the visionary world and the real. Hōtan's world map was so popular that it is not difficult to find it to-day.—Ayusawa

Scope and Content Note
Oranda Shinyaku Chikyu Zenzu. "The Map of the Whole World, Newly Translated from Dutch Sources." Engraved by Kobayashi Heihachi
of Ōsaka and Ogawa Tazaemon of Kyōto and "examined by Nagakubo Sekisui of Mito," Kōkan's elder contemporary. Eastern and western
hemispheres, each 13 diam., printed on a sheet 36 ¼ x 20 ¼, with text surrounding the map. Copper-engraved. Colored and heightened
in gold. Edo, Kansei 8. Folded, in original covers, the latter having the Dutch title Algemeene Waereld Kaart embossed thereon.
Boxer mentions editions of this same year without the embossed Dutch title. Cartographically quite similar to Kōkan's map
of 1792 except less advanced in a few respect. Here the outline of Australia omits the eastern half entirely, whereas in the
engraving of 1792 the entire continent is shown. Also California is drawn as an island where in the map of 1792 it is shown
as a peninsula. Beans.

Daimin Kyūhen Bankoku Jinseki Roteisu "World Map (representing Chinese Thought)" China is situated predominantly in the centre,
and the other countries are arranged round it, North and South America being drawn as separate small islands, and Europe and
Africa being left uncompleted; this expresses contemporary Chinese ideas on world geography. The fact that such dogmatic world
maps were widely favoured in old Japan shows that some Japanese in the Age of National Isolation believed Chine to be the
centre of the World and all the other countries to be in subordination to her. Ayusan 47 1/3 x 48 Color.

Oedo Kiriasu. "Sectional Map of Edo." A collection of street plans of districts of Edo on 30 (31 by Kurita) sheets, published
by Kirindō, a firm operated by Owariya Seishichi, Edo., v.d.,1852-1869. Sizes vary from 35 ½ x 19 ½ to 21 x 19 ½, but the
sheets are uniformly folded to 3 ½ x 6 ½, with, a standardized cover label. Our set reached us "unopened", with each map individually
wrapped by the publisher. It is on some of these wrappers, which would be discarded by the customer, that we find the general
title. Each wrapper repeats the title of the individual map within. The maps are color-printed. The collection is housed in
a case of the period (4 ½ x 8 ¾ x 7 ¼), made of paulownia wood, with a removable door. This gathering of large-scale plans,
rich in information, brings to a culmination the long array of plans of Edo published during the Tokugawa Era. In our set
the dates run from 1852 to the second year of Meiji so it seems best to catalogue the group at the very end of our list, at
the same time noting the dates that are retained on the individual sheets:---Beans
