Abstract: Herbert Newby McCoy (1870-1945) was a chemist who taught at the University of Chicago and the University of Utah and was the
vice-president of Lindsay Light & Chemical Company. He wrote
Introduction to General Chemistry (1919) with his wife-to-be, Ethel Terry and contributed to numerous papers on physical chemistry, radioactivity and rare
earths. The collection consists of reprints of McCoy's publications, his laboratory notebooks related to his work on radium
and the rare earths, and other notes and notebooks.

McCoy was born in Richmond, Indiana, on June 29, 1870; BS (1892) and MS (1893), Purdue University; Ph.D, University of Chicago,
1898; assistant professor, University of Utah, 1899-1901; taught at University of Chicago, 1901-17; became vice-president,
Lindsay Light & Chemical Company, in 1919; wrote
Introduction to General Chemistry (1919) with his wife-to-be, Ethel Terry; contributed to numerous papers on physical chemistry, radioactivity and rare earths;
awarded Willard Gibbs medal, 1937; died May 7, 1945.
Collection consists of reprints of McCoy's publications, his laboratory notebooks related to his work on radium and the rare
earths, and other notes and notebooks.
