Subseries 4.2.  Course Files, 1977-1997 and undated.

Physical Description: 1 cubic ft.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This subseries contains class syllabi, handouts, blank assignment sheets, course evaluations, and lecture notes documenting Brian Stonehill's teaching in both the English Department and Media Studies Program. Stonehill also filed selected college writings in the course files, according to subject of the writing and course content.
Also documented in this subseries are collaborative teaching projects such as, "Are We Who They Were." This was a collaboration of the English and Theatre Department where Stonehill invited students to submit family stories that they remembered hearing from their parents, grandparents, or great grandparents. The stories were then submitted to a second group of students who transformed them into a script. Student actors then interpreted the script resulting in a theatrical presentation under the direction of Tom Leabhart of the Theatre Department.
This subseries is arranged alphabetically and numerically by class or subject.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This subseries contains outlines, proposals, notes, typescripts, correspondence with publishers, and research materials primarily for unpublished book projects. The only published book represented in this subseries is the Self-Conscious Novel: Artifice in Fiction from Joyce to Pynchon.
One project, Media Literacy in the Digital Age, was a work in progress for almost five years. It began in about 1992 with a proposal entitled, Desperately Seeking TV Guidance. Stonehill reshaped the concept during 1994-1996 and prepared various book proposals that entitled: What to Watch For; Screen Smarts; Mapping the Media; Visual Literacy: Making Sense of the Media Explosion; Campaign for Media Literacy; and The Media Literacy Movement. The project evolved until a manuscript entitled, Media Literacy in the Digital Age was accepted by the University of Texas Press and a publishing contract signed in 1997. Brian Stonehill was working on revisions to the manuscript at the time of his death.
To accompany various versions of the book, Stonehill also worked on two CD-ROM versions entitled, Screen Smarts and House of Visual Literacy (which was meant to accompany the book, What to Watch For). Planning materials for these projects is located in Subseries 6.5. Multimedia Projects. In addition, he also developed a television show entitled What to Watch For. Materials relating to the television project are located in Subseries 6.7. Television and Radio Projects and Subseries 8.2. Videotapes.
Another book project that he was working on before his death was High Definition. The first chapter of this manuscript was published in 1998, posthumously in SWIL, a Pomona College publication, which is located in this subseries.
This subseries is arranged alphabetically by title.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This subseries contains advertising materials, outlines, notes, scripts, research materials, newspaper clippings, still images, and proposals from various published and unpublished CD-ROM and laserdisc projects. The bulk of the materials in this subseries date from 1980-1997, however research materials for Stonehill's Understanding D. W. Griffith project date back to the 1890s and early 20th century.
Also included in this subseries are materials from the laserdisc Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise), the 1991 version of Marcel Carne's 1945 film, that Brian Stonehill produced and directed and which received the Laser Tribune award for Best Special Feature Disc and Best All-Around Disc. Materials from two other laserdisc projects that Stonehill worked on Regard for the Planet: 50,000 Photographs by Marc Graranger and Truffaut, 400 Blows and Jules and Jim are also included in this series.
Two of the CD-ROM projects represented in this series, Screen Smarts and House of Visual Literacy, are based on book projects that are located in Series 6.3. Books. The largest body of records in this series with regard to the development of a CD-ROM is the Understanding D. W. Griffith materials. The D. W. Griffith project was started by Brian Stonehill before his death and completed by the original project team after his death. In researching this project Stonehill had access to the papers and still images of D. W. Griffith located at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Brian Stonehill referred to this project as, "an interactive, scholarly, archival multimedia project." Understanding D. W. Griffith materials are also located in Subseries 8.3. CD-ROMs and include back-up discs from the project, project demos, and still images from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
This subseries is arranged alphabetically by the title of the project.
