Biography
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1922, Vic Mizzy is a composer of popular music
for television and movies. Two of his most memorable and enduring compositions
are the themes for the 1960's CBS television shows The Addams Family and Green
Acres. Mizzy's musical education began at the age of four, when he learned to
play George Gershwin tunes on a player piano. At 14, he joined with his
childhood friend Irving Taylor to write songs and lyrics, eventually winning the
Fred Allen Collegiate Amateur Hour contest. Mizzy and Taylor joined the Navy in
World War II, but still managed to write hit songs such as Three Little Sisters
during the war years. By the early 1960's, Mizzy was living and working in
Hollywood, writing for the Richard Boone Show and Kentucky Jones, before being
asked to score The Addams Family. The theme for Green Acres followed, along with
scores for film and television movies. A Southern California resident, Mizzy's
current work includes the CD Songs For The Jogging Crowd (2003), as well as
2004's New Spiderman Theme, written for the DVD release of the film Spiderman
2.
Scope and Content
The collection spans Mizzy's Hollywood years of television and film composing
from approximately 1963-2004. There are numerous television scores, primarily
handwritten, most notably his classic theme for the Addams Family, and for Green
Acres. Scores for other television shows such as Quincy, the Secret Life of
Henry Phyfe, and Delta House are also in the collection. Mizzy's film scores
range from music for The Night Walker starring Barbara Stanwyck (1964), a remake
of the Perils of Pauline starring Pat Boone (1967), and the Don Knotts feature,
The Reluctant Astronaut (1967). Mizzy's 21st century work includes the 2003 CD
recording "Songs for the Jogging Crowd" and 2004's "New Spiderman Theme,"
written for the DVD release of the film Spiderman 2.
