    Abstract: William Weaver (b.1923) was a free-lance writer, translator, music critic, associate editor of Collier's magazine, Italian correspondent for the Financial times (London), music and opera critic in Italy for the International herald tribune, and record critic for Panorama. The collection consists of Weaver's translations from Italian to English, including typescript manuscripts, photocopied manuscripts, galley and page proofs.

    Biography

    Weaver was born on July 24, 1923 in Washington, D.C.; BA, Princeton University, 1946; postgraduate study at the University of Rome, 1949; became a free-lance writer, translator, music critic, associate editor of Collier's magazine, Italian correspondent for the Financial times (London), music and opera critic in Italy for the International herald tribune, and record critic for Panorama; translated Italian and French opera libretti; has translated Italian novelists Georgio Bassani, Italo Calvino, Carlo Emilio Gadda, Alberto Moravia, Elsa Morante, and Umberto Eco; won a National Book Award for his translation of Calvino's Cosmicomics, a John Floria Translation Prize for his translation of Pier Paolo Pasolini's A violent life, and a P.E.N. Translation Prize and Lewis Galantiere Prize for his translation of Eco's The name of the rose.

    Scope and Content

    Collection consists of translations from Italian to English by William Weaver, including typescript manuscripts, photocopied manuscripts, galley and page proofs. Includes his translations of Georgio Bassani's The garden of the Finzi-Continis, Illustrissimi: letters from Pope John Paul I, Carlo Emilio Gadda's Acquainted with grief, and page proofs for Weaver's own Duse: a biography (c1984).
