Nixon had declared Executive Privilege over the tapes which were subject to a legal battle and constitutional debate. The tapes were transcribed by Nixon's secretaries and included the famous eighteen-minute gap which was famously blamed on Nixon's secretary Rose Mary Woods's accidental erasure. The tapes also revealed Nixon's coarse language which was a shock to the American public when transcripts were later published. The file also contains an image of John Dean who was the first to reveal the existence of the tapes, an image of bugging methods employed by Nixon against his enemies, and an image of Judge Sirica who was involved in some of the major decisions pertaining to the requirement for Nixon to produce the tapes.
