Custodial Note

Correspondence and speeches were purchased in 1971 from Harry N. Burgess. Scrapbooks were donated by John W. Kinkade in 1974. The processing archivists could not determine the provenances of the photographs and biographical miscellaneous.

1882-1884 Attended Medical School at the University of Michigan
1885 Transferred to and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. Established medical practice in Greeley, CO.
1887 Married Laura M. Arbuckle (1859-1924)
1896 Moved to Pueblo, CO and founded the Woodcroft Hospital
1912 Served as state chairman of Republican Party in Colorado
1914 Ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senator from Colorado
1920 Served as Colorado's representative to the Republican National Convention
1921 Appointed First Assistant to Postmaster General William H. Hays
1921-1922 Chairman of American Medical Association
1922 Appointed Postmaster General
1924 Death of Laura (Arbuckle) Work
1923-1928 Secretary of the Interior under President Warren G. Harding and President Calvin Coolidge

Scope and Content of Collection

The Hubert Work miscellaneous papers document the political career and public service of Dr. Hubert Work (1860 - 1942), a Colorado Republican who served as Postmaster General (1922-1923), Secretary of the Interior (1923-1928) under Presidents Harding and Coolidge, and Chairman of the Republican National Committee (1928-1929). The bulk of the collection contains correspondence, speeches, and scrapbooks.
