Abstract: The Office of Planning Photograph, Slide and Film Collection consists of photographs, slides and films that visually document
Santa Clara County from 1906 to 1980, with the bulk of the collection ranging from 1950 to 1970. The collection contains aerial
views of the County, commercial development, housing, historical landmarks, industries, parks, public facilities, transportation,
agriculture, maps and people.

These records were transferred by the Planning Department in 2008.
Processing Information
This collection was processed by Trista Raezer working under NHPRC grant RA-10047007, the Santa Clara County Archives Project.
A fuller account of the grant project is available at the Archives website. The photographs were kept in original order, but
where rehoused into new archival boxes and folders. The slides were removed from plastic containers. About half of the slides
were classified by the Planning Department. These slides were arranged in order and put into archival slide boxes. The other
half was classified by the processor according to the Slide Classification System created by the Planning Department. These
were arranged in order and placed separately into archival slide boxes.
Administrative History
The Planning Office is a division of the Department of Planning and Development of the County of Santa Clara. The Planning
Office's main role is to plan and regulate land use and development in unincorporated Santa Clara County. Their duties include:
maintaining general plan and zoning ordinances, implement planning studies, reviewing zoning applications, reviewing development
applications, and monitoring major building projects.
Scope and Content of Collection
The contents of the collection visually document Santa Clara County from 1906 to 1980, with the bulk of the collection ranging
from 1950 to 1970. The collection contains aerial views of the County, commercial development, housing, historical landmarks,
industries, parks, public facilities, transportation, agriculture, and people.The collection concentrates on the development
of the county, such as new housing developments, commercial developments and park and recreation development.The purpose of
this collection may have been to collect visuals for brochures and presentations.

The collection is arranged by subject. The collection is arranged into three series: Photographs, Slides and Films.
