The Board of Health for the City of San Diego was created by a charter ordinance on June 5, 1876. At that time, the City
Board consisted of the City Trustees and a Health Office appointed by the Trustees. In the early 1920’s, the City formed
a Health Department. A County Department of Public Health was organized in 1933. In 1953, the City and County departments
were consolidated into one, and as such it had remained. Separately and (after 1953) together, these organizations have overseen
public health services in San Diego County for a century. The present Department administors hospitals, clinics, laboratories,
mental health facilities, health education and treatment programs, and medical training programs.
