Abstract: Papers of Marvin Studebaker, an amateur historian of the Civil War and San Diego. Included in the papers are Studebaker's
research on Henry J. Hartstene, a participant in Arctic exploration parties of the 1850s and a naval officer in the Civil
War. The papers also include handwritten notes by Studebaker, his transcriptions of Civil War era letters, and oversized copies
of newspapers from the 1840s regarding Arctic exploration.

Scope and Content of Collection
The Marvin Studebaker Papers document Studebaker's research on the career of U.S. naval officer Henry J. Hartstene.
Henry J. Hartstene served in the U.S. Navy from 1830 to 1861. Hartstene participated in exploration expeditions to the Arctic
during the 1840s and 1850s. He served in the navy of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, 1861-1865.
Hartstene died in France in 1868.
The collection is arranged in three series: 1) HENRY J. HARTSTENE RESEARCH, 2) WRITINGS and 3) MISCELLANEOUS RESEARCH.
SERIES 1: HENRY J. HARTSTENE RESEARCH
The HENRY J. HARTSTENE RESEARCH series contains Studebaker's research on the career and Arctic expeditions of naval officer
Henry J. Hartstene, from 1840 to 1865. Research materials include newspaper clippings; Studebaker's handwritten and typed
research notes, bibliographies, and correspondence; and handwritten and typed transcripts of Hartstene's correspondence and
journals relating to Arctic expeditions.
SERIES 2: WRITINGS
The WRITINGS series contains Studebaker's handwritten and typed drafts of articles about the Civil War.
SERIES 3: MISCELLANEOUS RESEARCH
The MISCELLANEOUS RESEARCH series contains documents related to the Civil War and to the United States Navy, and Studebaker's
research notes and correspondence.

Marvin J. Studebaker was an amateur historian who focused on research regarding Henry J. Hartstene, San Diego history, and
the American Civil War.
