    Project Information

These images were assembled from items held by the Brisbane Library History Collection, and were digitized in order to provide broader access to information about Brisbane's past. The digitization project will allow the Brisbane Library to work closely with local teachers and students and develop collaborative projects using the History Collection. Other History Collection users, such as local residents, genealogists, environmentalists, authors, filmmakers, and developers will also benefit from the wider access provided by the project.
This project was part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP), a multi-year program supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Leveraging the infrastructure of the CDL in partnership with Califa and Infopeople, the LHDRP explores a model to aggregate, preserve, and provide permanent public access to local history materials maintained by California cultural heritage institutions via a single statewide online access point. For more information about the LHDRP, see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/oac/lsta/ .
Project activities spanned from July 2007 through June 2008. Activities included digitization and cataloging of selected photographs, postcards, and other printed ephemera in the History Collection. Digital objects were created and cataloged using CONTENTdm, a digital asset management tool shared by LHDRP participants. The cataloging conforms to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Objects specifications for descriptive and copyright metadata (see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/guidelines/ ).
Digitization was performed by Northern Micrographics using flatbed scanners. For each physical item, three digital image files were created: a TIFF master, a JPEG access image, and a GIF thumbnail image. Digital image files conform to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Images (see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/guidelines/bpgimages/ ).

    Scope and Content of Collection

The Brisbane Library History Collection includes images of historical interest to Brisbane, San Francisco and San Mateo County. Items were selected from a larger collection held by the Brisbane Library. That collection includes approximately 5000 images, 300 negatives, books about Brisbane, tape recorded oral histories, local newspapers dating back to 1930s, local history clippings and pamphlet files, and a few artifacts. Consult the library for more information.
