Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains the production materials (circa 490
leaves) compiled for the projected volume IVA, a computer generated index, in
the
CTP series. The Index was being
produced in association with Jos de Waele at the Katholieke Universiteit
Nijmegen. Although the material preserved here indicates that the volume was
substantially complete, it appears never to have been published. Included in
this subseries are various proposals for an index, samples of text, proofs and
financial statements. The correspondence between Vander Poel and Waele also
forms part of this subseries. It documents the progress of the
CTP project, as well as Waele's
other research and publications.

Scope and Content Note
This subseries includes the specific production materials for
volume V as published in 1981. However, Vander Poel's research on the
historical cartography of Pompeii forms the most important element of this
subseries. He compiled an extensive research collection of plans, spanning the
range from Latapie's early work at the site to recent tourist pamphlets. The
majority of these plans are photographic or reprographic copies, but a few
originals are also included. The dates given with each plan below represent the
date of the state of excavations depicted, and this is frequently different
from a plan's publication date. The plans are arranged chronologically.

undated
Physical Description:
2.1 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains material (circa 3,200 leaves) orphaned
when the volume structure of
CTP changed in development. In the
earlier planning stages of
CTP, an alphabetical index and a
numerical index were envisioned at various times as independent elements and as
a combined volume in the series. An appendix, a listing of miscellaneous
categories of information about Pompeii, would supplement these indices. In the
final publication, however, the majority of this material was incorporated into
volume II. The alphabetical index became the "Toponymy" section and a portion
of the material from the numerical index was published in a chapter of that
volume.

New editions of early archaeological publications on
Pompeii,
1796-1989
Physical Description:
34.5 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
In addition to the
CTP, Vander Poel envisioned another
ambitious series of publications. He planned to issue new editions of many of
the classic, early archaeological publications on Pompeii and to present
unpublished material which he had tracked down. Vander Poel hoped to increase
access to these source materials for Pompeii and to make them easier for the
modern scholar to use. Many of the early publications on Pompeii were
monumental, heavily illustrated folio editions, very rare and held by only a
limited number of libraries. His new editions would increase their
availability. These new editions would also be augmented by the scholarly
apparatus which would facilitate their use as research tools.
The precise form these new editions were to take remains unclear.
For most of his projected new editions, the research appears to be in
preliminary form. The majority of the material in the series consists of
reproductions of his source materials and his initial notes on supplemental
information. His primary focus was providing information on original location,
current location and bibliography for the architecture, paintings and objects
presented in the early works.
Much of the material presented in this subseries lacks a specific
date and individual items are therefore marked as undated. However, for
original research a date within the range from circa 1958 to 1996 can be
assumed, with the exception of reproductions of early material.
Arrangement
The series is arranged in seventeen subseries. These subseries are
presented alphabetically by author.

Roque Joach. de Alcubierre (1702-1780), the military engineer in
charge of excavations under Charles III, kept a journal for the period from
1738 to 1756 with reports of the excavations at Pompeii, Herculaneum and
Stabiae. Vander Poel tracked down the unpublished manuscript and commissioned
translations from the original Spanish into Italian. The date of the
translations in unknown. Vander Poel had intended to publish the translation
with an analysis and documentation of the sections on Pompeii.

Early documentation of Pompeii by Edward Falkener,
1846-1851,
undated
Physical Description:
2.1 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
Edward Falkener (1814-1896) was an English architect with an
interest in antiquity. In the course of a Grand Tour, Falkener spent an
extended period in Pompeii in the years 1846-1847 studying and sketching the
ruins. He even supervised excavations in the house of Marcus Lucretius (IX 3,
5). In 1974, Vander Poel located Falkener's papers in the possession of his
heirs in Guernsey and in 1976 arranged to have photographic copies made of his
drawings.
This subseries consists of reproductions of those materials, as
well as other sources. Falkener's drawings and sketches dating to 1846 include
plans of houses, mosaics, architectural elements, objects and reconstructions.
Vander Poel also planned to publish Falkener's "Dulcis Pompeia," an unpublished
manuscript dating to 1851. The date of Vander Poel's work on the manuscript is
unknown.

Material related to the work of Giuseppe Fiorelli,
1854-1979,
undated
Physical Description:
12.9 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
Giuseppe Fiorelli (1823-1896) was the scholar responsible for
establishing scientific excavation at Pompeii. Given Fiorelli's dominant role
in the history of Pompeiian archaeology, it comes as no surprise that Vander
Poel planned to update and expand several key works by this author and gathered
a significant amount of other material related to Fiorelli and his work.
As the primary project related to Fiorelli, Vander Poel intended
to create a new edition of
Pompeianarum Antiquitatum
Historia
. Fiorelli had compiled and edited the original daily and
weekly reports of the early excavators of Pompeii during the period from 1748
to 1859. He published this compilation as
Pompeianarum Antiquitatum Historia
(P.A.H.), which came out in three volumes from 1860 to 1864. The majority of
the material in this subseries relates to Vander Poel's analysis and
documentation of the
P.A.H. volumes. The content of
these volumes is invaluable, yet as published they are extremely difficult to
use. They have no indices nor standard topographic references. The project of
transcribing and analyzing the
P.A.H. had been begun by Tatiana
Warscher in the 1930's (see above Box 112) and was continued by Vander Poel
since 1960. He envisioned creating indices and intended to "analyze and
interpret" the work in a new four volume publication.
Vander Poel also intended to do a project involving Fiorelli's
1875 synthetic guidebook
Descrizione di Pompei. This was
spurred by the fact that Vander Poel gained access to an annotated copy of the
book belonging to August Mau (1840-1909), one of the great Pompeian scholars of
his time. Vander Poel was interested in the intersection of these two scholars'
thoughts on Pompeii and commissioned a transcription and translation of Mau's
notes. He also intended to add topographical analyses and documentation.
The rest of the subseries contains material related to a third
work by Fiorelli,
Gli scavi di Pompei dal 1861 al
1872
and other miscellaneous material related to Fiorelli.

Research on the work of Wolfgang Helbig,
undated
Physical Description:
0.4 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
In 1868, Wolfgang Helbig (1839-1915) published
Wandgemälde der vom Vesuv verschutteten
Städte Campaniens
, a catalog of almost 2,000 frescoes from Pompeii,
Herculaneum and Stabiae. The work represented the culmination of five years of
research in Pompeii by Helbig and included every painting excavated up to 1867,
arranged by subject. Although now extremely out of date, the work remains an
important tool for the identification of Campanian paintings.
In his work on Helbig, Vander Poel continued a project begun in
the mid 1930's by Tatiana Warscher (see above Boxes 109-111). This new edition
of Helbig would have provided details and corrections in provenance information
and current locations and inventory numbers where possible, as well as
indicating analogies. Vander Poel also included current bibliographic
information. The date of Vander Poel's research on Helbig is unknown.

William Light (1786-1839) was an English soldier and surveyor,
best known as the founder of Adelaide, Australia. Between postings, Light
traveled and sketched in Italy.
Views of Pompeii, a book of
lithographs after his drawings, was published in 1828.
Vander Poel intended to identify and document features of the
ruins seen in the drawings. This subseries contains the copy work negatives
used by Vander Poel to create a reproduction of Light's book (see Separated

Scope and Content Note
Charles François Mazois (1783-1826), a French architect, spent
the years 1809-1811 in residence at the excavations at Pompeii. His stay
culminated in a four-volume work
Les Ruines de Pompéi, published in
Paris from 1824-1838, which included his drawings and measurements of the site.
This was the first extensive graphic work on Pompeii.
Vander Poel initiated a course of general research on Mazois for
an analysis and documentation of his work. He gained access to Mazois' original
drawings for the work and he was particularly interested in documenting
variations between the original and the printed versions of his plans and
drawings.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi visited Pompeii on five occasions
between 1770 and 1778. The various volumes of prints executed from drawings by
him and his sons provide some of the earliest known views of areas of the site.
They remain important today because they include features of the site that have
long since disappeared. Vander Poel collected Piranesi images of Pompeii and
intended to identify the exact locations of the scenes depicted.

Scope and Content Note
Salomon Reinach (1858-1932) was a French archaeologist best
known for his encyclopedic compilations of ancient art. Vander Poel's interest
focused on Reinach's 1922 volume of line drawings of frescoes and mosaics,
Répertoire de peintures grecques et
romains
. Vander Poel intended to produce a three-volume work providing
a bibliography of these paintings, the provenance, dates of excavation,
inventory numbers and present location, as well as an index of all figure
identifications to date.

Herculanum et Pompéi, published in
Paris by Didot from 1861-1863, was yet another massive visual compilation of
Campanian material and as such presents the standard problems of inadequate
documentation for modern researchers. Here again Vander Poel compiled
information on original locations, bibliography, present locations and
inventory numbers for the objects presented in the plates. The precise date of
Vander Poel's research on this work is unknown.

Wilhelm Ternite (1786-1871) was a painter connected with the
Prussian court. A trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum in the spring of 1825 led to
a fascination with the surviving frescoes from these sites. Ternite copied the
frescoes and planned a massive comprehensive publication. Eleven parts of
Wandgemälde aus Pompeji und
Herculanum
were published from 1839 to 1858, but the project was never
completed. Vander Poel intended to add information on provenance, bibliography
and analogies for the paintings presented in the publication, but his work on
this project appears to only be in its initial stages.

Research on Wilhelm Zahn,

,
1828-1859,

undated
Physical Description:
3.2 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
Wilhelm Zahn (1800-1871) was an architect and painter, who spent
the years 1824-1827 in Italy. A substantial part of this time was spent at
Pompeii studying and drawing the frescoes. His work
Die schönsten Ornamente was
published in six parts from 1828 to 1859 and reproduced the paintings and
decorative moldings of Pompeii. It was meant to be used as a pattern book for
designers and as such has drawbacks for scholars. The reproductions of the
paintings are very accurate in the details, but sometimes figures are
transposed and the precise original location of a painting is rarely given.
Vander Poel had prepared his "Apparatus" for Zahn, essentially
an unpublished manuscript of additions of bibliography and provenance
information for each plate in Zahn. Also included here are Vander Poel's
earlier research materials, that is copies of his cataloging sheets and
photographic copies of the plates and transcriptions and photographic copies of
the text.

Gli ornati delle pareti was a
suite of 109 prints documenting paintings and mosaics from Pompeii. These
prints were originally published in three bound volumes from 1796 to 1808;
subsequent printings up to 1838 produced varying editions. During the course of
his research on these prints, Vander Poel both acquired a volume of the prints
and commissioned photographs from copies of
Gli ornati held in several
libraries.

Documentation of objects in the Museo archeologico

Physical Description:
5.6 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
Improving the documentation of objects from Pompeii in the Museo
archeologico nazionale di Napoli was another of Vander Poel's goals. Concerned
over the state of the records in the museum, Vander Poel initiated two
projects, a reconstruction of the catalog of the museum, which had been lost in
the 1960s, and a photographic inventory of the frescoes not on public display.
Work on these projects appears to be in preliminary form.

Scope and Content Note
Vander Poel began a reconstruction of the Museo Archeologico
catalog because the original volumes, which recorded the acquisition numbers,
dates of acquisition, and inventory numbers of objects held by the museum, had
been lost. This reconstruction emphasizes the frescoes, but also includes other
media, such as marbles, bronzes, vases, terracottas, and inscriptions. For each
object, Vander Poel provided basic information and bibliographic references,
and in many cases, a photograph.

Series VII.
Research in Campanian Archaeology (RICA) research
materials,
1724-1996,
bulk, 1910-1992
Physical Description:
98.7 linear feet, 25 flat file folders, 2
rolls
Scope and Content Note
The various research materials drawn together by Vander Poel and
his research team, known as RICA, comprise this series. Vander Poel collected
these materials in order to form a comprehensive resource for the study of
Pompeii since the wide dispersal of documentation on Pompeii and Herculaneum
had long presented a problem for scholars. Although many of the textual and
visual documents presented in this series are reproductions rather than
originals, Vander Poel created an invaluable resource for Pompeian scholars by
pulling together all these materials in one location.
Much of the material presented in this subseries lacks a specific
date, and individual items are therefore marked as undated. However, for
original research a date within the range from circa 1958 to 1996 can be
assumed, with the exception of reproductions of early material.
Arrangement
The RICA research materials are arranged in five subseries by
type of material.
Series VII.A.
General textual sources for the study of Pompeii,
1724-1996
Physical Description:
41.0 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
In combination with the books discussed in the Separated
Material section above, the textual materials presented in this subseries were
meant to form a complete research library for the study of Pompeii and
Campania. The materials are further divided into published and unpublished
sources.
Series VII.A.1
Published sources,
1724-1996
Physical Description:
34.1 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
The published source material collected by Vander Poel is
exhaustive. This subseries contains articles and extracts from longer works
which take the form of offprints, photocopies and photographic copies, often
from obscure publications. The material presented here covers the archaeology,
philology and history of the Campanian region, as well as its geology and
volcanology.
Aside from its sheer bibliographic value, this subseries is
important because of the scholars' notes and annotations preserved in the
offprints. This subseries contains significant quantities of material from the
library of Matteo Della Corte, as well as material from Tatiana Warscher,
Pietro Soprano, G. Oscar Onorato, Martin Frederiksen and other scholars.
