Series II.B.  Records of lawsuits, 1916-1938

Physical Description: ca. 2 lin. ft.

Scope and Content Note

Records relate to lawsuits in which Duveen Brothers became embroiled. The subseries contains correspondence between Duveen Brothers and the firm's lawyers, including prepared public statements, correspondence with involved individuals, and clippings. The Demotte suit, ca. 1922-1923, regards a 13th century statue, said to have been taken from a church in the village of Saint-Sauveur-sur-Ecole and replaced with a copy. The statue (or copy) was later sold by G.J. Demotte (antiquarian) to Mr. Dreicer. Demotte sued Duveen for declaring the statue a fake. The Da Vinci suit regards a painting owned by Mrs. Andree Hahn of Kansas City. She claimed the painting was De Vinci's La Ferronniere and Joseph Duveen declared it a feeble copy of the painting in the Louvre. Carl Hamilton's suit (brought May 1935) charged Duveen with adversely affecting the price of four paintings acquired by Hamilton (1916 and 1929) through Duveen.

Series II.F.  Kleinberger & Co. Inc. Records, 1906-1971

Physical Description: 8.5 lin. ft.

Scope and Content Note

This subseries comprises original letters to and copies of letters from Harry G. Sperling, president of Kleinberger Galleries. This portion of the Kleinberger records presumably found its way into the Duveen records through Harry Sperling's work with Duveen Brothers. The correspondence is primarily with other dealers, and includes invoices and paid bills. It also includes letters of expertise from art scholars. Fairly extensive files with Nicholas Karger (1939-1965) and A. Loebl (1928-1969) relate to Kleinberger and Sperling's business in South America and Paris. The records contain a small amount of Harry Sperling's personal bills and papers relating to his travel. The bulk of the records date between 1936-1970.

Series II.I.  Papers regarding major art collectors, 1901-1965

Physical Description: 56 lin. ft.

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains individual and grouped files on the major collectors (from Altman to Widener) handled by the firm. Files contain correspondence between Duveen Brothers and collectors, between the Duveen branches, as well as letters with other dealers, scouts and experts about dealings with collectors. Original letters from scholars (such as Berenson, Wilhelm von Bode, Maurice Brockwell, R. Langton Douglas, Max Friedländer, Paul Ganz, Leo Planiscig, Georg Swarzenski, W.R. Valentiner, and others) give expert opinions as well as reports of art works seen in private collections. When original letters of expertise were given away to clients, such as Kress and to Norton Simon (when the firm was sold to him), files of copies exist. Collector files are arranged alphabetically. Files of letters of expertise from scholars are filed at the end of the subseries, but letters also may be found scattered within the collector files.
