    Biographical/Historical Sketch

    Carl Alsberg was educated at Columbia University, culminating in his M.D. in 1900. He taught at Harvard from 1902-08 and then joined the USDA where he was a chemical biologist from 1908-12 and chief of the Bureau of Chemistry 1912-21. He came to Stanford University in 1921 and was one of 3 founding directors of the Food Research Institute.

    Notes from interviews with businessmen in Hong Kong, Singapore, Java, and other places. Main topic is agriculture and food production, with some comments on cultural and political issues. Also includes several pages on his personal observations in Java.
