    Scope and Content of Collection

The Western Sugar Refinery Records, 1871-1949, contain letter books, technical reports, shift superintendent's reports and other material related to Claus Spreckels' sugar operations in San Francisco. Formed as the California Sugar Refining Company in 1867 at 8th and Brannan in San Francisco, the refinery processed sugar cane from Hawaii and elsewhere. In 1881 Spreckels expanded the business, building a second refinery on Potrero Point. He called the new refinery the Western Sugar Refinery.
Arranged hierarchically in rough chronological order. Contains letter books of general correspondence with managers and superintendents, mechanical reports, raw sugar cargo lists, polarization, technical statements, and shift superintendent's logs. Oversize folders contain drawings and plans of refinery and machinery.
