Biography / Administrative History
The Transit Reference Collection is an accumulation of reference resources gathered by the libraries of the LACMTA and it
predecessor agencies, beginning with Los Angeles Railway (1911-1945) and continuing with Los Angeles Transit Lines (1945-1958),
the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (1958-1964), Southern California Rapid Transit District (1964-1993), and the
Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (1993 to present). The reference material was an important source
of information for the library and transit agency staff.
Scope and Content of Collection
The items in this collection date back to the 1880's, but the bulk of the material is from 1940 onwards. The collection includes
maps, published histories of transit agencies, reports, transit studies, journals, and periodicals. It also includes records
of city and county franchise agreements dating back to 1885 and property deeds also extending back to the the 19th century.
