Historical or Biographical Note
Biography: Henrik Edwards Sievers (1911-1999) was born in Marin County and raised in Pacific Grove, Vallejo and San Jose,
California. He joined the Naval Reserve in 1928 and attended San Jose State College starting 1929. An active seaman from 1930
to 1975, Mr. Sievers gained Master status in 1943 while working for the Alaska Transportation Company. Early in his career
he sailed with the Dollar Steamship Line and Standard Oil Company of California, and later with the Alaska Transportation
Company and American President Lines. He was a member of Master Mates and Pilots, Master Mariners, Maritime Veterans Commonwealth,
Navy Reserve and Maritime Historic Association. After retirement in the mid-1970�s, he remained active in maritime affairs
spending time consulting, lecturing and traveling.
The Captain Henrik E. Sievers collection (SAFR 22131, HDC 1580) is a record of voyages, duties, responsibilities, events,
correspondence and commentary about the maritime industry and culture between 1930 and 1993.
A twenty-five volume memoir of Sievers' career in the maritime industry as a Master Mariner and Marine Surveyor comprises
most of the collection. Additional materials relate to his career, retirement activities and a binder titled Merchant Marine
House Flags and Stack Insignia, published by the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office, First Edition 1961. Twenty-five letter size
folders contain the memoir. Seven legal size folders, two oversize folders and one roll contain the additional materials.
The collection is open for use without restrictions.
