Project Information

The photographs for the project were chosen from the Eloise Perkins Collection which holds approximately 2,000 photos and only 200 are currently available online. The collection also contains correspondence and notes which were not digitized. Both these and our other local history collections are available to the public by visiting the Escondido Public Library's Pioneer Room. We hope to continue to add to our digital collection in the future using the CONTENTdm software and the training that our staff members have received during the grant year.
The Local History Digital Resources Program made possible by the LSTA grant has helped us further our mission of preserving and making available to the public our local history and genealogy collections by helping provide greater access. Our archive has very limited hours for public access therefore our hope is that through digitization of our collections we can expand both awareness of our collections as well as access to them.
Our project began in July 2008 and ended in June 2009. We chose a collection which was already processed to a certain degree so during our grant year we identified photos for digitization and gathered background information on all of the photos in the collection to provided better descriptive data about them. Digital objects were created by Northern Micrographics using a flatbed scanner and each photograph was scanned as a JPEG, TIFF, and GIF then saved to CDs which were then returned to our institution. The objects were then catalogued using CONTENTdm, a digital asset management tool provided to LHDRP participants.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Eloise Perkins Photograph Collection holds approximately 2,000 photos, with 200 currently digitized. Perkins (1921-1989) was a staff writer for the Times-Advocate from 1949 until 1981. The collection reflects a portion of her work focusing on her time as a columnist. She wrote local interest stories centering on Escondido, CA and the surrounding environs. She also traveled and researched Buffalo Bill, William F. Cody and Kit Carson. Elements of the collection reflect these interests. The collection offers photos from a range of eras, some as early as the 1890s and others as late as 1980 providing an excellent look at Escondido's past. Materials in the collection include photographs, correspondence, notes and historical information associated with her travels in preparation for feature articles. The full collection finding aid and the finding aids for other collections relating to the history of Escondido and the surrounding environs can be found in the Escondido Public Library's Pioneer Room, a local history and genealogy archive.
