Scope and Content of Collection

The James K. Asselstine papers include memoranda, reports, studies, and correspondence related to nuclear power plants in the United States, including issues of licensing, safety, and waste management.

The collection documents Asselstine's work for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Asselstine served as a member of the NRC from 1982 to 1987. When voting on Commission issues, he often favored increases in safety measures, using his background as a lawyer to inform his decisions. The bulk of the collection consists of the SECY (Office of the Secretary) File, which includes memoranda, reports, and voting response sheets related to NRC decisions. The collection also includes materials related to commissioners who served with Asselstine.
