Description
Records documenting the growth and development of the Friends of the UCSD Library, a
non-profit educational organization dedicated to supporting the interests and needs of
the libraries at the University of California, San Diego. The materials consist primarily
of correspondence, committee records, meeting minutes, membership lists, keepsake
publications, lecture program posters, and cassette audiorecordings of lecture speakers.
Also included are undergraduate essays, publicity materials and photographs. The records are arranged in five series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE,
2) SUBJECT FILES, 3) BOOK
COLLECTION CONTEST MATERIALS, 4) PUBLICATIONS, and 5) LECTURE PROGRAMS.
Background
The Friends of the UCSD Library is a non-profit educational organization whose members
take an informed interest in the activities of the libraries and the University. Since
1961, the Friends have provided financial support for the enrichment of library
resources, particularly through the acquisition of books in support of academic programs.
The Friends sponsored exhibitions, receptions and public events, such as the Public
Events Series, the Great Authors Series and the Contemporary Writers Program. Between
1975 and 1985, the Friends sponsored an annual contest for the best undergraduate book
collection. The Friends have also published several facsimile keepsakes from holdings in
the Library's collections.
