Biographical / Historical Note
Ikebana is the Japanese study and practice of flower arrangement in order to create a closer bond with nature. In 1956, Ellen
Gordon Allen established Ikebana International (I.I.) headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. Her vision for I.I. was to be a cultural,
non-profit, and non-governmental organization that would spread the art form of Ikebana throughout the world. By the late
1950s, I.I. had chapters in cities as far as London to South Africa.
In 1959, approximately thirty women in the Sacramento region submitted membership forms and received permission to create
the Ikebana International Sacramento Chapter. At a banquet held on December 3rd of the same year, the Sacramento Chapter received
it's charter -- the second to be organized in California.
In 1963, Sacramento held the second official Ikebana International Conference.
The Sacramento Chapter continues to hold meetings, programs, exhibits, and tours pertaining to Japanese culture and the Ikebana
art form.
