Biography

Roland Dennis Hussey (1887-1959) was born in Massachusetts, received his M.A. in history from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in history from UCLA. He was a longtime faculty member of the History Department at UCLA, ca. 1930-1954. His field was Latin American history. During World War II and the postwar years of 1942-1947, Hussey served the U.S. Department of State as Assistant Chief of the Office of American Republic Affairs, and as Divisional Chief of the Office of Intelligence. He was author of works such as The Caracas Company, 1728-1784 (1934) and co-editor/translator of the Documents on Inter-American Cooperation: 1810-1948, 2 vols. (1955) . Hussey also was director for many years of the program to produce the multi-volume Handbook of Latin-American Studies, and was editor of and frequent contributor to the Hispanic-American Historical Review.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains U.S. State Department Official Dispatches, Office of Strategic Services Research and Analysis Reports and other documents mainly relating to the Sinarquista Movement in Mexico during World War II. Some items originally were marked confidential or secret, but have since been declassified.
This manuscript collection accompanied a much larger collection of books on Latin American history, which was purchased by the UCSB Library in 1960.
