Arranged as received; documents are arranged by exhibit and volume number.
Scope and Contents
Comprised of documents produced by the U.S. government in response to the receiver's request for evidence in the case
United States v. Peoples Temple. Also includes court documents filed between Peoples Temple and the Attorney General of Califonia to start the process of
dissolving Peoples Temple as a Californian corporation.
The
United States v. Peoples Temple documents are arranged by exhibit and volume number and consist of three main types. Financial records include invoices,
receipts, and records of costs incurred in the retrieval, transportation, and burial of those who died in Guyana. Legal records
consist of court documents from Guyana and the United States, including a report on the performance of the Department of State
and the American embassy in Georgetown, Guyana, in the case of Peoples Temple (folder 2387) as well as transcripts of statements
by survivors pertaining to the events of November 18, 1978, and an FBI transcript of the "Last Hour" tape. Correspondence
includes memos, telegrams, and letters between different government departments, the American embassy in Guyana, the Guyanese
government, lawyers, and the Army corps responsible for the transportation of the bodies. Also includes correspondence from
the general public to elected officials responding to announcements that the U.S. government would fund the retrieval and
return of the bodies to the United States, and redacted copies of memos and telegrams released by the Department of State
to the receiver (folder 2417).
Included in this series is an index listing fingerprint and thumbprint identification of the bodies, as well as pathology
reports from Guyana with the results of toxicology examinations on some of the bodies.
