Scope and Content of Collection
The collection mainly contains invitations, programs, articles, reviews, and other items relating to the 1949 Johann Wolfgang
von Goethe Bicentennial Celebration, which were collected by Goethe -
Faust scholar Stuart Pratt Atkins (1914-2000), UCSB professor of Germanic, Slavic, and Semitic Studies from the mid-1960s to the
mid-1980s. Atkins previously had retired from Harvard University.
Included is a program for Lotte Lehmann's recital of lieder based on Goethe texts, given at UC Berkeley, and a photograph
of Albert Schweitzer and an autograph by Thornton Wilder in an Aspen program. Atkins also donated a number of monographs to
UCSB Special Collections, mainly German literature, which have been cataloged separately.
