Scope and Content
The Edward A. Fox letters consists of 33 letters written by Union Sergeant Fox to his mother Hannah J. Fox during the period
August 1862-February 1863, and more than 50 letters and notes written to his fiancee (later wife) Jennie Greenleaf from the
late 1860s to the 1880s. Also included are assorted letters written from France at the beginning of the first World War and
correspondence with a male relative.
The letters from Fox to his mother describe his experiences while serving with the Union Army (Connecticut Volunteers, 14th
Regiment) in northern Virginia. They include documentary material and personal commentaries on military training, camp life,
deserters, abolitionists, hired soldiers, prison policy, and battle. They also include a detailed account of the Union defeat
at the Battle of Fredericksburg, where Fox was seriously wounded. Subsequent letters, written from a hospital in Washington,
D.C. discuss his medical treatment and care. Many of the letters include thumbnail sketches to illustrate a soldier's costume,
battle action, construction of a fort, a pup-tent, and a winter cabin.
The letters to Miss Jennie Greenleaf (later Mrs. Edward A. Fox) date from the period of their courtship through their marriage.
The collection also contains a transcription of all the Civil War letters, created by Fox's granddaughter Mildred Fox Hansen
(located in Box 2).
