Abstract: This collection comprises the papers of Tarow Indow, professor of Cognitive Sciences and founding member of the Institute
for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. Indow was an internationally known expert on
the human visual system and semantic memory. The collection primarily contains lecture notes, teaching materials, and reprints
of his scholarly articles. The materials reflect his research interests in mathematical models in visual space, color space,
and human memory.

Dr. Tarow Indow was an internationally known expert on the human visual system and semantic memory. His research, reported
in over 100 technical papers in major journals, covered geometric representations of visual space, formalisms of color space,
stochastic representations of semantic memory, and ability testing.
Indow received his Ph.D. from Keio University in Tokyo, where he then rose to a full professorship and later became professor
emeritus. During his early years in the United States he held visiting positions at Harvard, the Institute for Advanced Study,
and at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). In 1979 he became a professor in cognitive sciences at the School of Social
Sciences at UCI and was later a founding member of UCI's Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences. He was also a respected
member of the International Society for Psychophysics, Society of Experimental Psychologists, and International Color Association.

Collection Scope and Content Summary
This collection comprises the papers of Tarow Indow, an internationally known expert on the human visual system and semantic
memory. The collection primarily contains notes for course lectures, conferences, and other presentations; reprints of his
scholarly articles; and teaching aids and research tools related to the science of color. The materials reflect his research
interests and teaching in the global structure and geometry of visual space; metrics in object color space, an interdisciplinary
problem in applied physics, experimental psychology, physiology, and mathematics; and retrieval of information from long-term
memory.
This collection is arranged by type of material.
Multiple publications were removed from this collection and cataloged separately in the library's online catalog
Library Search .
Student grade reports were removed from the collection and shredded. Also not retained in the collection were research files
largely containing photocopies of published works and correspondence, mostly concerning Indow's work as a peer reviewer.
