Scope and Content of Series

Series 16) ARTWORK: Arranged into five subseries: A) Portraits and Caricatures, B) Taxonomy, C) UC Division of War Research, D) Illustrations and E) “The Ocean World." Selected images from this series have been digitized. Images from Subseries A and C can be easily viewed by clicking on links in the container list. Several hundred images from Subseries E, "The Ocean World," have also been digitized and can be found by browsing the Sam Hinton Papers on the Library's Digital Collections website: Items available online 
A) Portraits and Caricatures: Sketches of individuals and groups. Portraits of note include Carl Hubbs, Martin Johnson, Roger Revelle and Harald Ulrik Sverdrup.
B) Taxonomy: Illustrations of plants and animals.
C) UC Division of War Research: Original drawings, cartoons and illustrations composed by Hinton during his time as an illustrator for the University of California Division of War Research during World War II.
D) Illustrations: Miscellaneous drawings, sketches and watercolor illustrations arranged according to subject.
E) “The Ocean World”: Original pen and ink drawings of marine life created for a weekly column published in the San Diego Union between 1958 and 1986, began while Hinton was curator of the Aquarium-Museum at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Illustrations are arranged alphabetically by the latin name of the subject.
