Abstract: Robert Ignatius Burns (b.1921) entered the Society of Jesus (1940), became a Roman Catholic priest (1952), and was a professor
of history at UCLA (1958- ). He wrote many books on Islamic Spain and the medieval Mediterranean region, including
Islam under the Crusaders: colonial survival in the thirteenth-century kingdom of Valencia (1974) and
Moors and crusaders in Mediterranean Spain (1978). The collection consists of manuscripts, typescripts, galley sheets, and miscellaneous materials related to Burns'
writings on thirteenth century Islam and the Crusades.

Biography
Burns was born August 16, 1921 in San Francisco, California; BA and MA, Gonzaga University, 1945 and 1947; MA, History, Fordham
University, 1949; Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University, 1958; entered the Society of Jesus (1940) and became a Roman Catholic priest
in 1952; professor of history, UCLA, beginning in 1958; author of many books on Islamic Spain and the medieval Mediterranean
region, including
Islam under the Crusaders: colonial survival in the thirteenth-century kingdom of Valencia (1974) and
Moors and crusaders in Mediterranean Spain (1978).
Scope and Content
Collection consists of manuscripts, typescripts, galley sheets, and miscellaneous materials related to the writings of Robert
Ignatius Burns. Most of Burns's publications focused on thirteenth century Islam and the Crusades.
