Abstract: Alan B. Williamson, Professor of English at the
University of California, Davis, is an author of poetry, short stories, and books on poetry. His works include:
Westernness: a Meditation (2006),
Almost a Girl: Male Writers and Female Identification (2001),
Eloquence and Mere Life: Essays on the Art of Poetry (1994),
Presence: Poems (1983), and
Pity the Monsters: The Political Vision of Robert Lowell (1974), among others. The Alan Bacher Williamson
Papers contain his poems, plays, short stories, and writing notebooks, as well as literary correspondence, and manuscripts
by
Frank Bidart and Richard Wertime.

Biography
Alan Bacher Williamson was born on January 24, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois to George and Jehanne (Bacher) Williamson. He
earned a B.A. from Haverford College (1964), and an M.A. (1965) and Ph.D. (1969) from Harvard University.
Williamson worked as Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia (1969-1975), Briggs-Copeland Lecturer at Harvard
University (1977-1980), and Lecturer at Brandeis University (1980-1982) before joining the University of California, Davis
faculty as Assistant Professor in 1982. Professor Williamson has served as Professor of English at UC Davis since 1983.

Scope and Content
The Alan Bacher Williamson Papers contain his poems (circa 1960-1975), plays (1963-1966), short stories (1961-1964), and
writing notebooks (1968-1997), as well as literary correspondence (1963-1981), and manuscripts by Williamson's friends Frank
Bidart and Richard Wertime.
Future installments are expected from Professor Williamson.
