Abstract: This collection consists of some coins, national and commemorative, including a Union Pacific "Lucky Piece", and adocument
granting land to refugees of Canada and Nova Scotia signed by Thomas Jefferson and granting 366 acres to John Paskell in the
"Chilicotha" [Chillicothe] District of Ohio.
The collection consists of miscellaneous American and foreign coins as well as the highlight of the collection, a land grant
for John Paskell signed by President Thomas Jefferson, May 4, 1802.
Paula Hassinger '43 donated her estate to Chapman University to establish the Jack H. and Paula Hassinger Endowed Chair in
Education. She and her husband were educators and traveled the world working in schools run by the government. Her expertise
was ESL. She also taught in the Los Angeles school district. Her husband, Jack, was a school superintendant in Los Angeles.
It was the Public Statute II, 1800, 1801, that granted lands to the refugees from Canada and Nova Scotia. This was an act
regulating the grants of land appropriated for the refugees from the British provinces of Canada and Nova Scotia, dated Feb.
18, 1801. John Paskell received one of these land grants in a document signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary
of State james Madison on May 4, 1802. The 366 acres granted to John Paskell was located in Township No. XVIII and Range XVI
of "Chilicotha" (Chillicothe) District joining the district of Marietta. The grant was signed 1802, a year before Ohio became
a state.
The tract of land deeded to people from Canada and Nova Scotia was known as the Refugee Tract and was awarded to people who
left British Canada before July 4, 1776 and stayed in the U. S. until November 25, 1783 continuously, and aided the revolutionary
cause.
