Marguerite attended local schools and graduated from Roseville Union High School in 1936 at the age of fifteen. The Marguerite Etzel Smart Collection is arranged in five series: 1. Biographical History

Marguerite Lorain Etzel Smart was born on October 16, 1920 in Roseville to Leroy and Minnie M. Quigley Nugent Etzel. LeRoy was born in Placerville on August 4, 1890 and Minnie was born in Indiana on May 10, 1891. The couple married in 1916 and lived at 600 Oak St. in Roseville. Marguerite's sister Bette Mae was born on March 5, 1927. LeRoy then worked as an electrician for the railroad and the City of Roseville before becoming superintendent of the Pacific Fruit Express. He also served as a director for the Roseville Telephone Co. from 1930 to 1965. Minnie worked as a stenographer for C. B. McCrae, a local businessman.
LeRoy's father Christian B. Etzel was born in 1863 in Placerville and worked as a carpenter. His mother Lena Elmira Arvidson Etzell was born in 1865 in Placerville. The family lived at 125 Irene Ave. and 225 Jefferson St. Christian built a house at 110 Judah St. and moved the house to Oak St. Lena served as a director for the Home Telephone Co. in 1913 and continued as a director after the company was renamed the Roseville Telephone Co. in 1914, until her death in 1930. LeRoy replaced her on the board and served from 1930 to 1965. Christian joined the board of directors from 1935 to 1949.
Marguerite attended local schools and graduated from Roseville Union High School in 1936 at the age of fifteen. She met Larry Smart while attending high school. After graduation Marguerite attended Stockton Jr. College and in 1938 transferred to the College of the Pacific, now known as the University of the Pacific, graduating in 1940 with a degree in education. After earning her degree, she taught elementary school in Turlock before returning to Roseville to teach at Oak St., Vernon St., and Woodbridge Schools.
Lawrence A. Smart was born on November 5, 1918 in Oklahoma to Adolphus Marion Smart and Mayme Olive Howard Smart. His sister Dorothy Luella was born on May 6, 1916. His family moved to Roseville from Manteca in 1935. After graduating high school, Larry attended and graduated from Sacramento Jr. College in 1939. Larry enlisted in the U. S Air Force in 1940, stationed at McClellan AFB until 1942 when he was accepted in the Signal Corps Officer Candidate School in Fort Monmouth, NJ. Marguerite joined him in New York and they were married on July 16, 1942. During his service Larry was stationed in Texas, Louisiana, San Bernardino, and overseas in England and Belgium. After returning from the war in 1945, Larry worked for Crockard Chevrolet on Vernon St., Studebaker Auto on Riverside Ave., and the Diamond Match Lumberyard in Roseville.
Larry and Marguerite welcomed their first child Kirklan Lee on December 5, 1946, followed by David Ross on February 1, 1949, and daughter Laurel on August 14, 1953. The family bought a two acre lot off what is now Cook Riolo Rd in 1951. They bought a house on Lincoln St. from Tony Mealia and moved it to the property. Larry bought the Western Auto Supply Co. in Fair Oaks in 1955. The family moved to Fair Oaks later that year. Marguerite substitute taught school until her retirement in 1975. Larry sold the business in 1978 and also retired. Larry and Marguerite now volunteer with the Fair Oaks Historical Society and the Women's Thursday Club, and travel to see their children and grandchildren.

Scope and Content

The Marguerite Etzel Smart Collection is arranged in five series: 1. Albums/Scrapbooks, 2. Publications, 3. Ephemera, 4. Realia/Artifacts, and 5. Photographic Material. Items span the years 1885 to 2000.
The first series, Albums/Scrapbooks, consists of one file folder and is arranged chronologically. It contains Minnie Etzel's autograph book, which includes signatures of many of Roseville's prominent residents. Series 2, Publications, consists of one file folder and is arranged chronologically and includes uncited news clippings. Series 3, Ephemera, consists of one file folder and is arranged chronologically and includes graduation and death certificates, announcements, and programs. Series 4, Realia/Artifacts consist of one box and includes Marguerite's baby cap and shoes, and Christian's leather-bound notebook. The last series, Photographic Material, consists of forty-two photographs in one file folder and is arranged chronologically, which includes photos of the Etzel and Smart families and several homes in Roseville.
