Biographical Information
Eugene Modeste Alloo was born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1882. He was trained at the Brussels Conservatory at about the time Eugene
Ysaye was Professor there. He was a trombonist and timpanist, and later conducted as well. He was in the Belgian Army and
was a Belgian Grenadier. In about 1908 he came to the United States, settling in Boston, and became first trombonist in the
Boston Symphony Orchestra. For several years he conducted the Harvard University Orchestra (when it was known as the Pierian
Sodality of 1808). He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1917, becoming an organizer, trainer, and conductor of U.S. Military Bands
based in Camp Devens, Massachusetts. In 1919 he left Boston for Cincinnati, where he became first trombonist and assistant
conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under Eugene Ysaye. In the 1920's he came to Berkeley, where he was Conductor
of Bands until 1942. In that year, he joined the University of Miami, retiring in 1965. In 1974, he died in Coral Gables,
Florida.

This collection includes material relating to the life and work of Modeste Alloo, educator and conductor. There are biographical
materials, including photographs, articles and educational materials written by Alloo, and manuscripts, books and scores
which were marked by him. In addition, there are materials which relate to Alloo's father Charles, his son Cecil Bright Alloo,
Edward Deru, George Ernest Gibson, and Eugene Ysaye.
